The Bioscope registers few or no measurements – what should I do?

If the Bioscope registers a low number of measurements or none at all, this is often related to installation, visibility, or biological conditions in the cage. Go through the checklist below to identify and resolve the issue.

Check and verify the following points:

1. Pitch and roll (angle)

  • Check whether the Bioscope is hanging at an angle.

  • Excessive pitch or roll can reduce the quality and accuracy of the measurements.

  • Adjust the bioscope so that it is stable and positioned at the recommended angle.

  • Adjustment - pitch and roll

2. Visibility and clear line of sight for  the bioscope

  • Check if anything is blocking the lens, such as ropes, nets, biofouling, or other equipment.

  • Remove any obstructions to ensure the camera has a clear field of view.

  • Adjusting the depth may improve visibility.

  • If the lens is fouled, gently clean it using a lightly dampened microfiber cloth or soft paper.

3. Depth and positioning

  • Verify that the bioscope is installed at the recommended depth (6–12 meters).

  • Adjust the depth if the bioscope is positioned too shallow or too deep.

  • Observe where the fish are actually swimming in the cage. The Bioscope must be placed where the fish are present to generate measurements.

  • Look for schools of fish. If a feeding camera is available in the cage, it can be used to identify optimal positioning and swimming depth.

  • If the issue persists, it may be useful to test different positions and depths over time.

  • Ensure that the bioscope is positioned to capture a representative sample of the fish population in the cage, to achieve the best possible measurement accuracy and data quality.

4. Fish density

  • If there are few fish in front of the camera, the number of measurements will be low.

  • Observe the swimming depth of the fish and adjust the Bioscope position if necessary.

If the bioscope is correctly positioned, has a clear line of sight, and is online, but measurements still do not appear in the portal, please contact support for further assistance.
