The bioscope is tilted – what should I do?

Learn what pitch and roll  are, why stability is important, and how to adjust the bioscope step by step for accurate measurements and high data quality

Click here to go directly to the adjustment: Step by step guide

1. Pitch and Roll – Quick Explanation

  • Pitch: Rotation forward or backward

    • Positive: front points down

    • Negative: front points up

  • Roll: Rotation side to side

    • Positive: right side down

    • Negative: left side down

  • Measured in degrees (°) – provides an overview of bioscope stability

Why it is important:
Stable pitch and roll ensure accurate measurements. Large deviations can cause:

  • Incorrect or inaccurate measurements

  • Discarded data

2. Limits

  • Pitch: optimal between ±

  • Roll: optimal between ±

  • Adjustment should be performed if values exceed ±10°

If pitch or roll exceeds ±30°, the measurements will automatically be discarded.
To ensure data quality, it is strongly recommended to adjust the bioscope when values exceed ±10°, as even moderate deviations (between 10° and 30°) can affect accuracy.

3. Step-by-Step: Adjusting Pitch and Roll

 Pitch

Positive pitch - bioscope tilts forward

  • Check that the sea cable is not too tight or stuck

  • Adjust the sea cable with enough slack

  • If this doesn’t help: lift the bioscope, adjust the ropes, and redeploy it

Negative pitch - bioscope tilts upward

  • Check that all ropes hang straight with no knots

  • Lift the bioscope, adjust the ropes, and redeploy it

Roll

  • Check that the suspension ropes have equal length on both sides

  • The ropes have markings every 5 meters to ensure even length

    • Bioscope tilts to the left - negative roll

    • Bioscope tilts to the right - positive roll

After adjustment, check in the portal whether the pitch and roll are within the limit values. Repeat if necessary.
